We departed… and we arrived! Where? In Lesidren! And so we spent there the next
8 days.
We didn’t stop having fun from the first till the last day. After lunch we introduced
ourselves because this year we had a lot of new kids and we gave away our badges
and T-shirts. As usually we took a lot of photos. The first day ended at the disco.
Our program included various occasions – dancing, drawing, theatre, lectures
and games. The main topic of this year’s camp was “The Armenian communities in
Bulgaria”. During the first three days our special guest was Hair Surp Arshen.
He taught us two beautiful Armenian songs and a prayer which is said before meal.
Mrs. Hermine Duzian, our special guest from France, helped us with the musical
education. She taught us the anthem of AGBU and gave us precious advice about
the camp.
Mrs. Sonia Bedrosian was constantly next to us, giving us a helping hand in every
way she could. She and Mrs. Duzian helped us so that AGBU New York to give us
the money for the fourth camp Unger.
For second year in round the participants in camp Unger are divided in two groups
according to their age – 8-12 and 13-15 years. The group of the older ones has
a bit different occasions which aim to form their leader skills, to teach them
how to work in a team based on trust and good communication. All this was learned
while playing games.
Instead of theatre, drawing and dancing, the older ones had another creative
task – to write the camp newspaper. Every day they collected the news, took interviews,
made crosswords, sudoku and picked out jokes for the tomorrow’s newspaper. Every
morning they delivered the newspaper at the front door of every room.
Part of the obligations of the older group was the organization of games for
the younger children. The game that everyone loves is called “Treasure”. The older
children made this game for their younger ”ungerner” who went hunting for the
hidden treasure. The animators organized a different version of the game for the
older ones. Each of their tasks had a hidden aim – not just reaching the treasure
but answering some questions and passing impediments on their way. All this helped
them to form a united team.
The older children had another interesting task – divided in three mini-groups
to prepare and film a 10-minute movie, having a time limit of 1 hour and 30 minutes.
The three scripts were based upon the tale of the Red riding Hood in three different
variations – rocker, teenager and classic. The movies were shown after the theatre
play of the little children.
After they proved that they can handle with the management of the whole camp
“Unger” during the change-of-roles day and to lend a helping hand during the camp
perhaps next year the older kids will help us organize the whole camp.
A program containing various activities was worked out for the younger children
– dancing, drawing and theatre. During the theatre lessons the kids rehearsed
the play “How the flowers grow” which turned into puppet theatre. That was the
reason why the drawing lessons turned into hours of making puppets for the play.
With some materials at hand the kids made a wonderful fairy tale which was a surprise
for the rest of the campers.
The other activity prepared for the younger children was dancing however a lot
of the older ones joined. They all were doing great and for just a few hours they
learned 3-4 Armenian dances. For second year in round the game called “Treasure”
is organized by the group of the older kids. The game is so amusing – it contains
of questions and puzzles leading to the next clue and to the treasure. The teams
finished almost together and in the end everyone tasted from the sweet reward.
The other game organized by the older children was relay-race with questions.
The questions were based upon the lectures that the kids listened in the mornings.
Sometimes the children found it difficult to answer but all this was part of the
game.
The little kids closed down the camp with their puppet theatre and the received
loud cheering.
On 4 September all the campers visited the cave called “Sueva dupka” - an underground
jewel. Everybody walked through the narrow and steep paths astonished by the beauty
of the cave formations – some of them formed as Botev’s face, others like Virgin
Mary with her infant. At the end of the walk we all sang the song “Azkain orhnerg”.
This was in the concert hall of the cave where concerts are held and the orchestra
of the Bulgarian National Radio records their performances. At the end the guide
congratulated the kids for being so quite.
On 6 September instead of going to Sopot Lake because of the bad weather we went
for a picnic near the hotel. We sat on the green grass under an apple tree where
some sunbathed; others played cards and third just relaxed. During the walk we
proved ourselves to be a united team where the older ones help the younger and
we walk as an organized group.
The fourth camp Unger as its precursors was full not only of games and fun but
of serious sport activities. The organizers of the camp look care that everyone is in good shape and every
day begun with some gymnastics. In spite of the bad weather most of the afternoons
were spent out playing football – matches that will be written in the history
of camp Unger. There were results such as 3:3 and the phenomenal 4:4. There were
days when the victory was hard to take with 1:0 and days with utter defeat of
5:2. The goal masters of the Unger League were Anri, Karen, Sarko and Harry. There
were new players – Anto, Alex and Teddy played in the defense. Nowadays football
is not just a man’s game that was proved by Eliza D and Ani Po, who saved their
gates from certain goals! As always the manly part of the animators didn’t miss
the chance to play for 1-2 hours and most active of the veterans were Victor,
Drago and Garo as well as the younger Ivan and Bibi. The need of freshman is obvious
because of the dying sports careers of the veterans. This year volleyball had
an undisputable success. Most of the girls joined the game and Hair Arshen played
with them showing his great abilities. The organizers should consider the issue
of finding a volleyball court because this sport is getting more and more popular
among the “ungers”. A lot of the campers also played badminton. This camp Unger
was full of a lot of sport emotions, a lot of new sport stars were born and next
year, we are sure, they will show us more and more of their abilities.
